Postoperative renal failure is included as a separate entity, not because it is truly separate from other types of renal failure, but because the clinical situation is important and commonly encountered, and the simpler causes must rapidly be excluded.

The structure here points out some of the more likely causes of renal failure in postoperative patients, and then follows the appropriate management from what the house officer might attempt to the stage where renal doctors ought to be involved.
