In this condition there is a single longitudinal defect in the center of the nail plate with cracks running laterally to the longitudinal split giving the appearance of a “fir tree”. This condition is uncommon and is of unknown cause (1). Usually it affects the thumbnails. The defect starts at the cuticle and grows out to the distal edge.
