The clavicle is the first bone to ossify. It begins to ossify from medial and lateral centres from about five weeks' gestation. Elongation tends to occur at the sternal end in secondary cartilage.

A secondary ossification centre appears at the sternal end in the latter teenage years and fuses with the rest of the bone by the early twenties.
