A painful, stiff hand may result as a complication of diabetes, particularly in those whose longterm glycaemic control has been poor.

Diabetic sclerodactyly may be present resulting in tight shiny skin over the fingers. Similarly other complications may be present including flexor tenosynovitis, trigger fingers, Depuytren's contracture and nodal arthritis.
