Bilateral arrested lung development is usually incompatible with life. Agenesis, aplasia or hypoplasia tends to unilaterally affect a whole lung rather than a single lobe.

The condition is usually detected on routine chest x-ray as volume loss and absence of an aerated lung in the affected hemithorax.

Most patients have associated anomalies in other organs.
