Serum is the components of blood which remain after it has been allowed to coagulate and the clot has been removed. Hence, it is devoid of cells, platelets, fibrinogen and clotting factors. It contains water, electrolytes, proteins, lipids and a number of trace substances.

It is a constituent of plasma.
