Complete rupture of the Achilles tendon

Authoring team

Spontaneous rupture of the Achilles tendon is not uncommon. Men are affected more frequently than women, and tend to be middle aged.

Typically, the tear occurs whilst playing sport when the foot is pushing off or is subject to a sudden dorsiflexion force when the calf is maximally contracted and the knee is extended. The injury may occur in a person whom has been playing sport regularly but in whom the tendon has aged and become more degenerate.
