Protrusio acetabuli is a condition where the socket of the hip joint is too deep and bulges into the cavity of the pelvis.
This condition affects females more often than males. The primary form shows a slight familial tendency.
The condition develops soon after puberty. It is usually asymptomatic except for slight limitation of movements at the hip joint. There may be the development of secondary osteoarthritis in later life, and it is only when this occurs that treatment is required.
This condition may develop secondarily to conditions such as osteomalacia or Paget's disease, and longstanding rheumatoid arthritis. Joint replacement is indicated if pain is severe or movements are markedly restricted.
