Calcipotriol is a synthetic analogue of calcitriol, the active metabolite of vitamin D3.

In-vitro, it inhibits cell proliferation and enhances cell differentiation. It binds to intestinal calcitriol receptors with an affinity similar to that of calcitriol, but it has 100-200 times less effect on calcium metabolism.

Less than 1% is systemically absorbed, and this is rapidly converted to inactive metabolites.
