Massive hepatomegaly may be caused by:

  • secondary carcinoma
  • alcoholic liver disease with fatty infiltration
  • myeloproliferative disease
  • right heart failure
  • hepatoma

Moderate hepatomegaly - causes as above plus:

  • haemochromatosis
  • haematological disease:
    • chronic myeloid leukaemia
    • lymphoma
  • fatty liver - secondary to diabetes, toxins

Mild hepatomegaly - as above plus:

  • hepatitis
  • biliary obstruction
  • hydatid disease
