  • vaginal bleeding may increase or persist after a uterine evacuation for incomplete miscarriage or therapeutic termination of pregnancy
  • may be associated with lower abdomnal pain and / or systemic symptoms and signs of infection
  • there is an increased risk of pelvic infection and empirical therapy should be commenced pending results of microbiological swabs; should be started and swabs taken
  • patients should be referred to secondary care for further assessment, as some may require repeat uterine exploration (1)
