Hypogonadism in the female

Impaired ovarian function, whether primary or secondary, results in oestrogen deficiency and an abnormal menstrual cycle.

The menstrual cycle is very sensitive to disturbance. Initially there will be anovulatory cycling followed by irregularity and then amenorrhoea.

The investigation and treatment of female hypogonadism is dealt with under amenorrhoea.

Pre-pubertal hypogonadism results in delayed onset of puberty. Post-pubertal hypogonadism results in secondary amenorrhoea.

The symptoms and signs of hypogonadism in the female are due to oestrogen deficiency.
