The early motor development of these children is often slow. This is because of the large head, which is difficult for the infant to move freely, and the short limbs.

The head growth in the first year may be rapid. The growth of the head needs to be monitored carefully because in about 2% there is hydrocephalus which requires treatment.

Intellectual development is generally normal.

There may be neurological impairment in later life because of the development of spinal canal stenosis.

Adult height is short. The average adult male height is 131 cm and the adult female height is 124 cm.
