A gastrostomy tube is a specially designed tube which is placed in the stomach during either surgery or endoscopy.
They are indicated in patients who need long term feeding, for example in motor neurone disease or in head injury, in persistent dysphagia following stroke, or where there is a problem with accessing the upper gastrointestinal tract, for example, in oesophageal cancer.
