The most common features at presentation are:

  • abdominal mass - palpable in 80% of patients, the mass is lateral and nodular and may be visible on inspection
  • abdominal pain in 30% of patients - usually vague and poorly defined
  • haematuria in 25% of patients, usually microscopic

Metastases are present in 20%. They mostly affect the liver and lungs, and occasionally, bone.

General symptoms are commonly anorexia, weight loss, fever and anaemia.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are rare. They may cause hypertension or erythrocytosis.
