This antithyroid drug inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormone by inhibiting the organification of iodide. Additionally, it blocks the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3.

The half-life of propylthiouracil is one to two hours.

Its main use is the long term treatment of hyperthyroidism.
