(1) uncomplicated hypertension: no evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy, hypertensive retinopathy or renal impairment
(2) absence of other major cardiovascular risk factors: established ischaemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, familial hypercholesterolaemia, cerebrovascular disorders
(3) consistently well controlled blood pressure
(4) patients only receiving low dosage monotherapy
(5) patients with a normal echocardiogram
Some authorities regard 1,2 and 3 as sufficient conditions for the withdrawal of antihypertensive medication. However other authorities regard all 5 conditions as necessary in order for antihypertensive medication to be withdrawn.
