Frusemide is a loop diuretic, indicated for use in heart failure particularly where there is oedema and oliguria.

In the treatment of oedema oral frusemide is given in an initial dose of 40mg in the morning. A maintenance dose of 20mg daily or 40mg on alternate days may be used; the dose of frusemide may be increased to 80mg daily or more in cases of resistant oedema.

It may also be given via intramuscular or intravenous routes.

Often frusemide is prescribed in conjunction with a potassium sparing diuretic such as amiloride.

Check the summary of product characteristics before prescribing this drug.
