There is no medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease. If the symptoms are due to inflammation then they generally respond to medical measures. Surgical intervention is usually required when symptoms are due to strictures.

Clinical management of Crohn’s disease depends on

  • disease activity
  • disease location
  • behaviour of disease (inflammatory, fistulising or stricturing)
  • response to previous medications
  • side-effect profiles of medications
  • extra intestinal manifestation (1)
