Urgent surgical intervention is required to treat bilateral choanal atresia. In the emergency situation, a simple anaesthetic airway should be inserted to relieve the obstruction. A suitable opening can then be established electively by an ENT surgeon.

The atretic plate can be removed and the symptoms relieved.
