The investigations are clearly based on the history and examination findings. However, general principles are as follows:

  • acute causes such as sepsis should be urgently investigated and treated appropriately
  • non-paralytic floppiness investigated with CT scanning and chromosomal analysis
  • paralytic floppiness may be investigated with CSF, nerve conduction studies, electromyographic studies and ultimately muscle biopsy.
