  • rare
  • tend to arise in early adult life
  • inheritance:
    • familial trait: autosomal dominant with a tendency to form multiple nodules
    • sporadic: solitary nodules
  • site:
    • most commonly scalp
    • rarely, face or limbs
  • twice as common in females
  • very rarely associated with radiation-damaged skin
