Cerebral herniation occurs when intracranial pressure gradients lead to compression of the cranial contents against certain structures.

Types of cerebral herniation:

  • tentorial - herniation of midbrain and diencephalon through the tentorial hiatus

  • tonsillar - herniation of cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum
