A number of drugs and chemicals are either diabetogenic or produce diabetes via a direct toxic effect on beta cells. For example:

  • steroids which most often produce diabetes when used in patients with organ transplants
  • thiazide diuretics
  • phenytoin
  • diazoxide which inhibits insulin secretion
  • streptozotocin
