Candidal meningitis

Candidal meningitis is probably the most common fungal meningitis.

Infection of the nervous system usually occurs in severely debilitated patients. The most common associations are severe burns and use of parenteral nutrition.

Candida may colonise skin, urine and heart valves before infecting the meninges.

Diagnosis depends on indentification of candida in the CSF.

Treatment is with amphoteracin B and fluconazole.
