Epithelial ovarian tumours are classified into:

  • serous tumours
  • mucinous tumours
  • endometrioid carcinoma
  • clear cell carcinoma
  • Brenner tumour
  • undifferentiated carcinoma

The vast majority are benign:

  • 60% of serous, 80% of mucinous and over 95% of Brenners

Others are classified as:

  • borderline - low malignant potential - with at least 2 of epithelial budding, multilayered epithelium, mitotic activity, or nuclear atypia

  • malignant - most endometrioid and clear cell types
