Pain from the temporomandibular joint can be caused by:

  • Costen's syndrome (temporomandibular joint dysfunction)
  • osteoarthrosis of the jaw
  • rheumatoid and other arthritides affecting the jaw joints
  • strain or overuse of the joints or soft tissues of the jaw

TMJ disorders can cause referred pain (1)

  • it my present as undifferentiated headache
  • 55 % of patients with chronic headache were found to have significant signs or symptoms of TMJ disorders
