Cerebral oedema is revealed on CT scan.

CSF cells and protein are normal, but glucose levels may be reduced, as may the glucose levels in the blood.

Laboratory investigations reveal a prolonged prothrombin time and elevated aminotransferases.

The finding of ammonia in the blood may give some indication of liver involvement.
