  • dynamic:
    • mechanical causes obstructing lumen:
      • tumours
      • intussusception
      • gallstone ileus
      • impacted faeces
      • meconium
      • bezoars
    • intrinsic lesions of the bowel wall:
    • strictures, congenital, inflammatory, neoplastic, etc.
    • extrinsic lesions:
      • postoperative adhesions
      • inflammation
      • herniae
      • neoplastic masses
      • abscesses
      • volvulus
  • adynamic - lack of peristalsis:
    • paralytic ileus
    • mesenteric vascular occlusion
