On each side of the spine, rhomboid minor is a relatively small muscle which must be considered functionally with its partner, rhomboid major.

It originates from the:

  • spinous processes of the C7 and T1 vertebrae
  • intervening supraspinous ligaments
  • inferior border of ligamentum nuchae

It passes obliquely down and laterally to insert into the scapula at its medial border near to the triangular area at the base of its spine. Throughout, it lies deep to trapezius but deep to the long spinal muscles.

Rhomboid minor is supplied by the dorsal scapular nerve (C5). The function of rhomboid minor is considered in the submenu.
