Synovial fluid (normal)

Synovial fluid is normally clear and colourless, with the following features:

  • contains hyaluronic acid which is complexed with a protein - of which 60-70% is albumin - and results in the lubricating and viscosity of the fluid

  • normal synovial fluid has:
    • glucose similar to plasma
    • protein level less than plasma - ie less than 30 grams per litre
    • few white cells - <200 x 10^6 cells/L mainly mononuclear cells
