Authoring team

CT is indicated in the investigation of stroke where:

  • there is doubt about the diagnosis:
    • gradual onset or progressive neurological signs
    • no clear focal neurological signs
    • no clear history available

  • there is a need to exclude cerebral haemorrhage - the scan must be done within 14 days of onset:
    • current / planned anticoagulant treatment
    • current / planned antiplatelet treatment
    • current / planned thrombolytic treatment
    • planned carotid endarterectomy / angioplasty

  • there is a suspected cerebellar stroke with obstructive hydrocephalus:
    • acute onset of unsteadiness with deterioration
