Gold may be given:

  • as an intramuscular preparation - sodium aurothiomalate, marketed as Myocrisin (R)
  • orally - auranofin - marketed as Ridaura (R)

Gold sodium thiomalate is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and non-disseminated lupus erythematosus.

With oral preparations, there is often diarrhoea which may be reduced by the use of bulking agents such as bran.
