If there is uncertainty whether the bleeding is from the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract, a nasogastric tube should be passed.

Blood will be found if there is active upper gastrointestinal bleeding, except in the very unusual case where pyloric spasm prevents blood escaping from the duodenum into the stomach.
