The following steps are important in the treatment of constipation:

  • identify the cause of constipation, e.g.:
    • chronic disease
    • immobility
    • pregnancy
    • mechanical obstruction
    • drugs

  • educate the patient:
    • increase fibre intake
    • increase mobility
    • increase fluid intake

  • if essential, use a laxative:
    • the choice of laxative depends on the clinical picture
