Authoring team

The pro-inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-5, released by mast cells recruit eosinphils, basophils and Th2-lymphocytes.

Eosinophils release:

  • peroxidase
  • major basic protein
  • eosinophil cationic protein
  • interleukins 3 and 5

The results are:

  • ongoing inflammation
  • sensitisation of sensory nerve endings resulting in bronchial hyper-responsiveness
