Idiopathic hypercalciuria:

  • low calcium diet:
    • restrict consumption of dairy produce - milk, cream, cheese
    • ensure adequate fluid intake - 2-3 litres per day

  • thiazide diuretics:
    • reduce urinary calcium excretion
    • physiological mechanism uncertain

  • calcium binders:
    • oral phosphates e.g. sodium cellulose phosphate 5 gms before meals
    • sodium cellulose phosphate may cause secondary hyperoxaluria and magnesium depletion; thus dietary restriction of oxalate and magnesium supplementation should accompany treatment

Secondary hypercalciuria:

  • adequate hydration
  • treat underlying cause
