Factors predisposing to subdural haemorrhage include:

  • any factor that stretches the bridging veins:
    • cerebral atrophy, e.g. elderly
    • low CSF pressure after shunting, for example for long- standing hydrocephalus or a fistula
  • alcoholism
  • coagulation disorder or anticoagulation therapy
