Control of acidosis

Acidosis is rarely required to be specifically treated because the development of acidosis normally parallels that of uraemia. Uraemia may be sufficient (blood urea > 40 mmol/litre) to necessitate dialysis and this will in turn be managing any acidosis.

Emergency dialysis is indicated if:

  • the acidosis is severe and worsening
  • the patient is particularly at risk e.g. cardiac ischaemia
