The diagnosis of selenium deficiency is made on the basis of:

  • blood or tissue selenium levels
  • glutathione peroxidase activity of erythrocytes; correlates directly with selenium levels

Selenium deficiency is rare and occurs in two contexts:

  • endemic deficiencies e.g. Keshan disease
  • patients on TPN without selenium supplementation
