Causes of pseudobulbar palsy include:

  • motor neurone disease: in this case there are often upper and lower motor neurone signs
  • multiple sclerosis
  • bilateral cerebrovascular disease, e.g. ischaemia of both internal capsules
  • Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome
