Possible symptoms:

  • nasal obstruction - unilateral or bilateral
  • recurrent sinus infection
  • recurrent serous otitis media - because of impairment of the ability to equalise middle ear pressure

Possible signs:

  • lateral dislocation of the caudal end of the septum from the columella - causing narrowing of one nostril and a consequent narrowing of the opposite side because the septal cartilage lies obliquely
  • septum may be convex to one side

Nasal septal changes are seen on examination of the nose with a nasal speculum.
