The pathogenesis of bronchiolitis includes:

  • bronchial obstruction caused by oedema, mucous debris and viral invasion
  • air trapping, where air enters the alveoli and is unable to leave
  • atelectasis
  • reduced ventilation

It commonly occurs in infants with chronic lung disease - for example those ventilated as neonates.
