6-phosphofructokinase is an enzyme involved in the pathway of glycolysis. It is a non-equilibrium reaction and as such it can regulate the flux through the entire pathway. Consequently, it is also the target for molecules which regulate the rate of glycolysis; it is able to carry out this function by having multiple binding sites which allosterically interact.
6-phosphofructokinase converts fructose-6-phosphate to fructose-2,6-biphosphate. To do this, one molecule of ATP is dephosphorylated.
