This a sporadic form of Parkinsonism which affects middle-aged patients. Although clinically indistinguishable from Parkinson's disease, pathologically there is extensive neuronal loss and gliosis of the putamen and substantia nigra.

Strionigral degeneration forms part of the multiple system atrophy syndrome.
