Complications include placental transfer resulting in:

  • amnionitis leading to early abortion
  • premature labour
  • septic abortion
  • birth of an infected baby - with 50% mortality

Listeria can also be transmitted intrapartum via passage through a colonised genital tract.

There is no association with recurrent abortion.
