A study performed by the International Study Group on Reduced Osmolarity ORS (oral rehydration salts) solutions was undertaken into the the use of reduced-omolarity ORS in boys with acute non-cholera diarrhoea. This study included 439 boys aged 1 to 24 months and concluded that boys receiving reduced-osmolarity ORS had less total stool output and a shorter duration of diarrhoea than boys receiving standard ORS solutions.

It is probable that the results of the study are equally applicable to girls.
