Patients with acromegaly have double the expected death rate.

There is no evidence at present that treating the patients improves their life expectancy.

The increased mortality may be due to:

  • hypertension associated with acromegaly
  • diabetes associated with acromegaly
  • atheroma associated with acromegaly
  • increased rates of malignant disease
