Raised plasma levels of acid phosphatase are associated with:

  • prostatic carcinoma:
    • used in staging and monitoring treatment of extracapsular spread
    • not useful for screeing for localized prostatic carcinoma
  • benign prostatic hypertrophy - mildly raised
  • vigorous prostate examination
  • prostatic infarction - massively raised
  • urethral instrumentation
  • Gaucher's disease: non-tartrate labile acid phosphatase
