Osteotomy at the hip

Osteotomy is used for disease of the hip joint.

Younger patients with osteoarthritis of the hip but with preservation of some articular cartilage may be helped by a intertrochanteric realignment osteotomy. Osteotomy is good because pain relief and restoration of function may be permanent (75% at 2 years) and yet if symptoms return replacement arthroplasty is still possible.

Adolescents and young adults with acetabular dysplasia may benefit from a medial displacement pelvic osteotomy. An alternative is the "dial" osteotomy where the entire acetabulum is rotated.
